A new book by Dr. Kypros Chrysostomides brings together a collection of essays, speeches and articles that address crucial aspects of the Cyprus problem and particularly its legal and human rights implications as well as the island’s accession to the European Union and the role of the acquis Communautaire in the pursuit of a just and viable settlement.

Featuring the personal testimony and views of a writer with extensive involvement in the political and legal world of Cyprus for more than three decades, Cyprus: Legal and Political Reflections; Republic of Cyprus, 60 years on, offers readers invaluable insight into the key milestones in the recent history of the island and the search for ever-elusive justice for its people.

Published to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus, the book is a compilation of previously published work as well as newer essays on more recent developments. Whether it be articles published in the media, lectures to universities and other organisations here and abroad, or contributions to bicommunal meetings of the island’s political leadership, the anthology is of interest to both newcomers to the Cyprus issue and veteran observers of the island’s tumultuous post-independence years.

A common thread throughout is the writer’s concern over the continued uncertainty hanging over the island. As Dr Kypros Chrysostomides notes in his introduction, Turkey’s recent actions as regards the hostage town of Famagusta, its invasion into the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and its continued attempt to create a separate state in the occupied area of Cyprus, along with Ankara’s many other illegalities, present a vicious effort to frustrate any possibility of a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem.

Other than the writer’s reflections on the constitutional and legal aspects of the Cyprus issue, chapters of the book also examine key decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, Cyprus’ EEZ and the discovery of hydrocarbons and the EU dimension particularly after Cyprus’ accession to the bloc, among other, and make suggestions as to way forward.
